  1. THE SERV-U PROMO MESSAGE
  2. ========================
  3. This is Serv-U version 2.2, a FTP server (or Daemon) for MS-Windows 
  4. and its variants (Win95, NT) that use WinSock for TCP/IP network access.
  5.  
  6. Serv-U, the all purpose FTP server for WinSock offers the following:
  7. * Lots of security: Passwords, read/write/modify rights per directory or 
  8.   file for each user (including ANONYMOUS), access on the basis of 
  9.   IP-number.
  10. * Multiple simultaneous users and transfers.
  11. * Both in 16- and 32-bit, and very, very stable!
  12. * Support for UL/DL ratios, and disk quota limitations.
  13. * Can run as a 'system service' in Windows 95.
  14. * Uses an icon in the system tray in Windows 95 and NT 4.
  15. * Users can be put into groups for easy maintenance of large numbers.
  16. * Serv-U works well with Mosaic, Netscape, and MS Internet Explorer.
  17. * Access to all drives on your PC, including network drives.
  18. * A quite complete (and strict) implementation of RFC959 and RFC1123, 
  19.   including PASV, also supports the 'resume' command.
  20. * Supports 'links' like those in UNIX.
  21. * Supports multi-homed IP sites, and external user access verification DLLs.
  22. * Configurable greeting messages, for signon, signoff, and login.
  23. * Configurable directory change messages.
  24. * Can run 'invisible' - with no user access to the program.
  25. * Has a 'time-out' feature, so connections are automatically cleared when
  26.   idle or hung.
  27. * Fast! Transfer speeds are close to the maximum possible on your PC.
  28. * Easy to setup and maintain through menus. For automated maintenance the 
  29.   settings are stored in an .INI file of simple format.
  30. * Logs all transactions to file and screen that can be read by other 
  31.   applications. Includes unique session IDs, time, and date stamps. 
  32. * Log file can be read by other applications while open, or transferred 
  33.   through Serv-U.
  34. * A Windows standard: Over 4000 registered users with many for multiple
  35.   copies.
  36. * It is dirt cheap, less than 0.11ct per line of code!

  39. TRY-OUT
  40. =======
  41. The 30 day try-out version comes in two flavors, one of which can be 
  42. chosen during the first start-up: Either a fully functional version that 
  43. contacts a permission server to enforce the 30 days of try-out, or, a 
  44. slightly crippled version that does not contact the permission server.

  47. INSTALLATION/UPGRADING
  48. ======================
  49. Serv-U comes in a zip-file which in turn contains a self-extracting 
  50. executable which is a deluxe install program guiding you through the 
  51. installation. Just unzip the zip-file in a temporary directory and 
  52. run the setup program. Depending on your PC either the 16- or 32-bit
  53. version will be installed. After that follow the interactive setup and
  54. it will do the hard work for you. The setup program also installs a 
  55. start menu group and un-installer program. Once you are done you can 
  56. delete the original zip-file and extracted files.

  59. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ISDN USERS
  60. =============================
  61. If your ISDN connection is billed 'per minute' instead of a flat
  62. rate, and you've set up your system in such a way that it automatically
  63. connects to the Internet when a program wants to send/receive
  64. packets a little care is needed with Serv-U. Serv-U contacts the 
  65. permission server if it is started in fully functional try-out mode.
  66. If you are behind a firewall, or the permission server is not reachable,
  67. Serv-U will keep retrying to find the permission server.
  68. Meanwhile the server will work just fine, but your phone bill might 
  69. get a bit out-of-hand if this goes on for a week or so...

  72. NOTES FOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS
  73. ===============================
  74. The self-extracting installation executable is a zip-file in itself 
  75. which can be unpacked using any unzip utility. This lets you scan 
  76. the executables in there for viruses if needed. Also, instead of the
  77. interactive setup Serv-U can be installed by simply copying the 
  78. executable (SERV-U16.EXE or SERV-U32.EXE) into its destination directory.
  79. No other system changes are needed.
